KaladeaMUD – Planning Wiki
Time: 1 hour
Total: 76 hours
————————–
The rest of my project will be devoted to planning out KaladeaMUD and quite possibly sticking it into a Wiki. While I have much to do (and little time for programming), I hope to read more of Bartle’s book and figure out more of the issues.
I also figured there is quite a bit more reading I need to do in general. I should check to see what introductory economic majors at UNI use and read most of it. The worst thing for an online game is a super inflated currency. Hopefully come next year I’ll begin programming on it again, and this time with a battle plan.
In the mean time I will, over the summer and perhaps sometime soon, be learning both Ada and Lua. Lua looks to be the best scripting language to tie into Kaladea, and Ada is the language of choice for CS III. Now, I have pretty much skated through CS I and CS II without much strife or personal investmet. I doubt CS III will be the same way, so I’m looking forward to learning a new language.
In other news, I have one assignment (one extra credit assign if I can muster it) before I take my last final at UNI. To get an A in the class I need a 92% on the final. However, to settle for an A- I need to get a 66% on the final, and since the class average was 71% I’m guessing I should at least get that.

Looks like you’ve kept yourself busy with your ALPHA project. Hope it will be awesome. Wait, scratch that, it will be awesome.
As far as your concern on Kaladea’s currency model, I’m sure you’ll find a way to implement it. One MMO, Second Life, has been having some success with a currency model that attempts to emulate the real world’s. You find a way to figure this out and you’ll have a huge to component to differ your project from the other MUDs and MMOs out there.
I started a bit of programming myself. I decided to start with Perl, since it appears to be a frequently-used introductory language in bioinformatics courses. It’s touch and go for now, especially when I’m trying to use a Perl for Windows book while programming on a Linux laptop.

Heh, thanks for your confidence in Kaladea. I think with some hard work and dedication it could be a very fun game.
Perl is a fair starter language. Its used mostly in web processing (CGIs usually) from my experience. You might consider taking some introductory programming courses in Iowa. C/C++ are good languages to learn (widely applicable, especially when writing system software), though Java is the standard intro language here at UNI.

You KNOW Kaladea’s going to kick soo much booty when we get into it. Maybe after we remodel we should move to Iowa near you *pokes* Then I can beat the two of you into working on it. Everyone I’ve talked to about the design aspects I’ve come up with thinks that we need to get this thing up and going or I need to write a book based on it (or both).

Your comment comes almost four years after the post! I think it would be great if you wrote up a book on it, and it might be a fun topic for NaNoWriMo this year.
I have a code base I work on occasionally, but with launching a business it seems unlikely that I’ll put time into it in the near future. That said, it is probably best to wait while the main coders of the MUD community work on changing MUD protocols and such (http://www.mudstandards.org/forum/). They have produced some neat stuff that will make Kaladea pretty awesome.
