After a brief time of tinkering I have decided to put this away for the night. It almost works, but quite honestly, I already dislike it. Why do it this way when I can do it easier graphically? I don’t know.

Because CLI is the shit! And works great for people when they can’t get a GUI working.

Actually CLI is often the best way to test things, as you have less to go wrong and it is 100 times simpler. That being said, GUI does usually beat the hell out of it. Supposing you can get a GUI working. When you learn to use various tools like FLTK then it becomes a snap.
